Comparrison of the Color Purple Book and Movie

lHaley Sullivan Think of the person who means most to you in life. Now imagine what life would be like if you never saw or heard from them again. This is what happens to Celie, the main character in the novel The Color Purple written by Alice Walker and the movie The Color purple directed by Steven Spielberg. The novel The color purple was published in 1982. The story is told through letters written by Celie to God. The only sentences outside the letters are the first two â€Å"You better not never tell nobody. It’d kill your mammy. † The story follows Celie throughout her life starting from when she was 14.Celie is a poor black girl from the south who is verbally physically and sexually abused by all the men in her life, mainly her father and husband. The only person she has ever left truly loved her is her sister Nettie. The two are inseparable until Nettie is forced away and never allowed to see or speak to Celie again. Celie writes letters to God because now that Ne ttie’s gone she has no one else to talk to. She writes about Mr. ___ her husband, his family who becomes somewhat hers, and Shug Avery. Shug is Mr. ___’s lover who comes to stay with Mr. ___ and Celie because she was very sick. Shug takes a strong liking to Celie and vice versa.Shug helps Celie see that she is a beautiful woman and that she isn’t worthless like people in her past had made her believe. Thanks to Shug’s guidance love and support Celie breaks free of the hold Mr. ___ once had on her and finally stands up for herself. The movie The Color Purple was directed by Steve Spielberg and was released in 1985. The movie stays true to the novel in only a few ways. The movie is not told through letters because that would have been too complicated to stage. In the novel you get to learn more about Nettie’s life along with Celie’s, while in the movie you only see Celie’s side of the story. The movie uses many different aspects of film to emphasize its beauty and emotional feeling of the novel. For example Steven focuses a lot on color in the shooting of the film. The scenery, no matter where being shot, has an undertone of browns and greens. Then in significant scenes there are pops of purple or pinks to show that you’re supposed to be noticing something or to emphasize what the characters are talking about. Steven Spielberg also uses high and low angles to show who has power during certain scenes. So whenever Mr. ___ and Celie are having a conversation Mr. __ is always shot from a low angle to show that he has power over Celie, and Celie is shot from a high angle to show that she has less power than Mr. ___. Spielberg also used numerous voice-overs in the film to narrate thoughts during moments that silence was incorporated. So from all the information and observations I’ve gathered I’ve decided my thesis is that, the novel The color purple written by Alice walker is better than the movie di rected by Steven Spielberg. I believe this statement to be true because when it comes to the details and complexities of the characters in the story the movie sells the book short. The movie shows the characters relations with each other to be very one sided while in the novel characters develop much deeper relationships with each other. I also liked the book better because it really allowed you to see inside Celie’s head. You felt the pain with her as you read her heartfelt letters to God about her hardships and, everyone in a while, moments of supreme joy. I did appreciate the acting in the movie though. Whoopi Goldberg and Oprah Winfrey were discovered because of the film.

Personal Reflections Essay

The concept of self in the social world has been the subject of psychology studies for decades. Self-concept is defined as â€Å"a person’s answers to the question, â€Å"Who am I?† (Myers, 2010). Several factors, both internal and external, create each individual’s sense of self. Self-concept, self-esteem, self-knowledge, and social self all help create the sense of self. Self-schemas are an important component of one’s self-concept. A schema is simply defined as â€Å"mental templates by which we organize our worlds† (Myers, 2010). Self-schemas are the beliefs one holds, which define who we are. Self-concept The development of our self-concept has numerous influences, which include roles played, social identities formed, comparisons made, personal success and failure, judgments, and cultural surroundings (Myers, 2010). Roleplaying can include what we are in our professional life, as children in school, and into adulthood. The roles we assume may not feel like second-nature in the beginning, however, as we evolve within our roles, we become a more self-confident role player. Social comparison shapes an individual’s self-concept through academics, finances, and looks. The impact the comparison has is dependent who we are comparing ourselves to. Personal success and failure occur on a daily basis at work, school, and home. Judgments made by our peers strongly influence our own perception of self. Positive feedback will result in a positive view of one’s self, as a negative feedback will result in a negative self-concept. Our cultural surroundings impact our self-concept also. Westernized cultures tend to be more self-absorbed than an Eastern culture. â€Å"In many Western cultures, there is a faith in the inherent separateness of distinct persons† (O’Malley, 2002). Individualism and collectivism are two concepts describing how  individuals view their importance within their culture. Individualism is mainly seen in a Western culture, where an individual places personal goals and gains over a group’s goals and gains. Collectivism considers a group’s goal as a priority over an individual’s goal. â€Å"Most cultures native to Asia, Africa, and Central and South America place greater value on collectivism† (Myers, 2010). The interdependent self is defined as the â€Å"view of the self and the relationship between the self and others† (O’Malley, 2002) within a group. Self-esteem Self-esteem is â€Å"a person’s overall self-evaluation or sense of self-worth† (Myers, 2010). People have both low self-esteem and high self-esteem, depending on the variance of difficulties in their life. Poverty, drugs, and abuse can all be considered a factor in a person’s low self-esteem. High self-esteem can also be portrayed a negative trait, especially when the individual is viewed as narcissistic. Narcissism is defined as â€Å"having an inflated sense of self† (Myers, 2010). Self-efficacy Self-efficacy is defined as â€Å"the belief in one’s capabilities to organize and execute the courses of action required to manage prospective situations† (Cherry, What is Self-Efficacy?, 2014). Self-efficacy is not the same as self-esteem, which is how valuable an individual perceives themselves to be. An individual’s self-efficacy is the belief they are capable of accomplishing a task, even when the task is challenging. Studies of the Self Various studies of the self in psychology have offered an insight into what is believed to be the center of self-concept. Carl Rogers believed self-image, self-esteem, and ideal self are the three components of self-concept. Self-image is â€Å"how you see yourself† (Cherry, What is Self-concept?, 2014). A person’s self-image can include positive and negative aspects, which may or may not be realistically true. Self-esteem is the how valuable a person believes they are. Comparison between a person’s own successes and another’s can impact their self-esteem in a negative or positive manner. Ideal self is how a person would like to see their self. Ideal self is not necessarily how an individual actually perceives their  self, rather the idealistic version that person dreams of being. Who I am Amanda’s Self-concept By asking myself â€Å"who am I†, I am able to define my self-concept. I am a mother and I love my children. I am a full-time employee at ESCO Corporation. I am a college student at the University of Phoenix, studying Environmental Science. I am not an easy person to get along with, and I tend to take criticism personally. Amanda’s Self-esteem I have low self-esteem. My low self-esteem has been an ongoing issue from childhood. I struggle with my weight, which was not a real issue until I was out of high school. I thought I was overweight as a teen, when in reality I was at a healthy weight. After I had my first daughter at the age of 18, depression slowly took over my carefree and happy personality. I began to eat more in an attempt to feel better about myself. I remember one incident as a Senior which really made an impact on my self-esteem. While changing classes, I waited at my locker for a classroom to finish letting students out. One of the disabled girls from that classroom kept looking at my mid-section. She finally asked me â€Å"are you pregnant or something†. I was not pregnant anymore, and had given birth two months before. Hearing another person say I looked like I was pregnant still brought my feeling of self-worth to the lowest point at that time. Amanda’s Self-efficacy My self-efficacy can be compared to a roller coaster. I do challenge myself to excel at work and school. I believe I can accomplish anything I put my mind to. Over the past decade, I have improved my self-efficacy, with a tremendous improvement over the last five years. The individuals I have chosen to surround myself with, as opposed to in the past, have helped me accomplish my dreams. My fiancà © encouraged me to stand up for myself, especially with my parents. My parents had been involved in raising my children to the point I was not able to make a decision without calling for their opinion first. The feeling of dread would overcome me due to the fact I knew my parents would not approve of my decisions if I did not talk to them first. I finally realized I was holding myself back, and I could make important family decisions without their approval. I signed up for the  University of Phoenix for the reasons I believed were important. I did tell my parents I was going back to school after I had signed up, and I saw the disappointment they felt over not being able to control me with the decision. My fiancà © has been encouraging throughout my studies, and continues to give me the push I need to finish my last five classes. References Cherry, K. (2014). What is Self-concept? Essay on Analysis of Article on Teen Pregnancy - 1691 Words

Suddenly teen pregnancy IS cool? 1. Teen pregnancy is up partly because there is less of a stigma associated with teen pregnancy since there is more of a cultural permission to be a younger mother. The rise is also partly due to the portrayal of celebrity teens such as Jamie Lynn Spears in the media and other cultural shifts, giving teens the idea that having a baby is the new handbag. 2. The reason the authors use allusion in the first paragraph is to show the readers that teen pregnancy is becoming a trend amongst celebrities and its sweeping teen culture along with it. Whether or not the average teen thinks unplanned pregnancy is fashionable, there are numerous celebrity and pop culture examples of hip, unmarried moms. The†¦show more content†¦Other contraceptive options include the day after pill, fertility awareness and voluntary surgical sterilization. These are just a few examples of why not getting pregnant should be easier in our time period. 5. There are a myriad of factors that contribute to the rise in teen pregnancy in America. The reason why the countrys rates of teen pregnancy are high is that Americans simply do not have a strong social norm that teen pregnancy is not OK. For teens, many blame the rise if teen pregnancy on abstinence-only-programs, saying that they deny teens of information that could help them make safer decisions when they do have sex. Poor access to emergency contraception and abortion also may explain the increase in teen births. There are more limits now on abortions such as longer waiting periods, fewer abortion providers, parental permission, and large fees. Teen pregnancy in America is becoming socially accepted in society. Schools are even planning to implement a four week maternity leave for students so they can recover and get used to the baby without penalties for missing class. This gives young individuals the idea that it is acceptable to be pregnant and they will be provided with sup port. Canada has a slightly lower percent in teen pregnancy in comparison to the US. However, Canada should consider the rises in other countries as foreshadowing of what could happen to them. International Trade Empirical Evidence

Question: Discuss about the International Trade Empirical Evidence. Answer: Introduction The present assignment covers a discussion and explanation on the globalization with respect to Australias international business. The assignment aims to present the concept of globalization, considering the analysis on Australias trading areas as well as trading parties across the border. The study further incorporates discussion on the relative issues of international business and globalization that results in collapse of several business deals and projects. In order to present the concept on globalization, foreign investment policy of Australia has been analyzed which explains Australias contribution for international business. Globalization refers to the process through which business organizations share ideas, products, services, technologies and other business aspects. It is a procedure, which involves international trading and international investment with the assistance of informational technology. As the process of globalization affects the environmental factors, cultural system, political system and development of economy, it is essential for the organizations to evaluate all the factors while entering into international business (Pieterse, 2015). With the rapid increase in globalization, international business has become significant in the recent years that involve undertaking of business activities across the internal borders. Globalization and international business impacts the economy and transforms different countries as well as industries in several ways to create high rate of gross domestic product (GDP). At the same time, globalization creates several opportunities to for the countries as well as for the organizations together with certain challenges and issues that need to be monitored by different industries (Mitchener Yan, 2014). Considering the recent trends of globalization, Australian has significant contribution in the foreign investment and international trade that resulted in the enhancement of quality of life. It has been observed that due to free trade policy across the international borders, Australia has become one of the largest international traders resulting in increase of competitiveness, improvement in standards of living as well as innovations in business activities (Jorgenson Rice, 2015). As per the current data, it has been noted that Australia business organizations involve significantly in global investment valued around $2.1 trillion during the year 2015. United States as well as United Kingdom regions are the largest investment destinations as the amount of outward investment is $594 billion as well as $353 billion respectively (Austrade.gov.au, 2017). Australia has also been investing large amount of economy in the Asian countries amount of which increased to $346 billion in the year 2015 from the amount of $70 billion in the year 2005 (Dfat.gov.au, 2017). Australias international trade not only involves trade in commodities and miners but also in the services of banking and telecommunications. During the year 2013, value of export in Australia valued around $251.7 billion (Austrade.gov.au, 2017). Considering the international trade for commodities and minerals, Australia exports iron ore, coal, wheat, gold products, aluminum products, wool, natural gas products , mining and transportation equipment. It has been noted that Australian trade in the product of mined coal involves 54% whereas the commodity trade involves 85% and 60% for the agricultural goods (Austrade.gov.au, 2017). Considering the present economy trends, Australia has been largest exporter of the product iron- ore while Britain region and United States region has been major trading partners. However, Australia is focusing in trading with Asian countries that is China, Republic of Korea and Japan becoming largest partners in trading (Simas et al., 2014). As the international trading policy of Australia incorporates limited restrictions to encourage free trading across the borders in terms of import of goods and services, productivity has been increased together with the growth in economy. International trade in Australia associates with unilateral, bilateral and multilateral trade practices that assist in strengthening of economic collaborations at international level (Rogers, Lee Yan, 2015). In the present international trade practices, Australia currently involves in ten free trade agreements (FTAs) amounting to approximately 67% of the total trade. Such trading parties are New Zealand, Singapore, Thailand, United States, Malaysia, Korea, South East Asian Nations, Japan as well as China (Austrade.gov.au, 2017). Considering the trade for the products related mining and resources, Australia has been largest producer of iron ore, bauxite, zinc ore natural gas, uranium as well as coal mining. It has been noted that the production and trading in the mining sector Australian economy constitutes around 9% whereas the export value from the minerals and fuel products incorporates 42% (Austrade.gov.au, 2017). Analysis on the current market scenario of Australia, total value of export amounted to A$ 316.6 billion which incorporates the export of iron ores amounted to $49,060 million and export of coal minerals amounted to A$37,031 (Austrade.gov.au, 2017). As Australia is considered as largest trader in iron ore products, maximum amount of export is derived from the products of Iron ore as well as coal minerals, which is exported mainly in top exporting countries China, United States and Japan. Consequently, Australia is considered as developed country in terms of manufacturing equipments for mining, manufacturing technologies and services. Apart from that, business organizations in Australia have become competitive in accordance to the supply chain, engineering processes, training as well as the process of research and development (Bowman, Gilligan O'Brien, 2014). In view of the globalization process, there are several challenges involve that affects the growth and sustainability of the business organizations. The primary issues included in the process of globalization are considered in terms of governments, society as well as political factors. It is essential to ensure that the potential advantage of globalization extends to all the nations and regions (Kalfadellis, 2015). Several organizations involve in international trade as a part of globalization, which influences instability in the business activities and affects the strategies in developing countries. Another primary challenge of globalization associates with the wage structure, labor rights practices in employment and environmental factors that results in collapse of certain organizations. Due to difference in wage payment structure or labor policies in different countries, companies on other countries find it difficult to appoint competent or experienced workers (Clougherty Grajek, 2014). Even though international trade in Australia reflects increasing trend for different products with different countries, there are certain challenges and issues involved that affects the economy and globalization outcomes. Major issue includes in international trade is structure of the company with respect to the production techniques, working coordination, appointment of experts and competent officials to understands the target market and business strategies. Another issue that affects international trading is foreign laws and principles that regulate the organizations in the international countries related to the laws of trading, tax implications, potential tariffs as well as legal costs (Kriesi, 2013). Several organizations experience challenges with respect to the international accounting as different countries have different accounting standards to determine and report financial values that affects the tax implications and financial risks. Good business involves appropriate busin ess strategy and proper accounting records to ensure the true business performance, appropriate profitability and appropriate tax liability. International trade is affected due to account international process as the comparative analysis becomes different due to difference in accounting methods, currency values and tax rates. Strategies in cost calculation as well as global pricing are another primary challenge the affects the international trade business. Favorable international trade depends on the cost of production, cost of shipping, cost of marketing as well as distribution together with the profit margin hence it is essential for the organizations to control the business costs (Korkmaz Union, 2013). Organizations are required to construct appropriate strategy in terms of global pricing so that the accurate profit margin can be estimated to make the international trade viable. Currency rates and foreign exchange fluctuations majorly affects the international trade hence, the o rganizational management is required to incorporate the provisions for higher currency rates by incorporating the rate of foreign exchange fluctuations while setting the price of products. International trade largely depends on the currency fluctuations for instance; trading in a currency US dollars would involve higher cost of export whereas trading in weaker currency might depreciate the currency and lower the total cost (Kalfadellis, 2015). Conclusion In view of the above discussions, it can be said that the globalization is affecting the economy of the country due to exchange of products, technologies, ideas, cultural values and services. Globalization not only involves international trade but also involves foreign investment and exchange of technologies that affects the cultural, political and environmental factors. It has been noted that Australia has been largest country for international trade as well as foreign investment that improved standard of living, financial economy and productivity. In addition, globalization and international trade in Australia enhanced the market competitiveness and innovations in the activities of business. As per recent data, it has been noted that major trading products in Australia are minerals and resources, agricultural products, gold, wheat and natural gas products. In the current year, Australian economy reflected largest trade in the product of iron- ore while the value of foreign investme nt reflected around $2.1 trillion in 2015. Besides, globalization involves certain challenges with respect to governmental, social and political factors. Accordingly, organizations are required to consider these factors ensuring the benefits of globalization and international trading is received by all the countries. Reference List Austrade.gov.au. Pride And Prejudice By Jane Austen Essays (636 words) -

Pride And Prejudice By Jane Austen Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice is the story of an English family in the early 1800's. The central theme in the story is the necessity of making a good marriage for each of the five daughters in the Bennet family. Elizabeth Bennet is the central character in the novel and the second oldest daughter. The role of her sisters' characters influence Elizabeth's thoughts about her own romantic interest, Fitzwilliam Darcy, throughout the novel. Lydia Bennet, Elizabeth's youngest sister plays an important role in Elizabeth's feelings for Darcy. Ultimately, Lydia's improper behavior brings Elizabeth and Darcy together, justifying Austen's portrayal of Lydia as an uncivilized, idle, and irrational young woman. Lydia Bennet's role in Pride and Prejudice is twofold. She is the first of five daughters to be married which supports the novel's main theme of the necessity of making a good marriage. Her elopement with Wickham brings disgrace to the family, nevertheless, she does marry which satisfies her mother's wish to see all of her daughters marry well. "The business of her life was to get her daughters married." (Vol. I, Chapter 1). Lydia's role is also that of her mother's favorite daughter. She is like her mother in many ways; insensitive, simple, and brassy. "In Lydia's imagination, a visit to Brighton comprised every possibility of earthly happiness. She saw herself seated beneath a tent, tenderly flirting with at least six officers at once." (Vol. II, Chapter 18). Lydia is the complete opposite of Elizabeth who is sensitive, intelligent, and considerate. Austen uses Lydia's rash behavior as a means for Elizabeth, the central character, to understand that Darcy is "the man who, in disposition and talents, would most suit her." (Vol. III, Chapter 8) Throughout the novel Elizabeth misunderstands Darcy's intentions and actions, and rejects his initial proposal of marriage believing that they are ill-suited. When Lydia elopes with Wickham, Elizabeth is mortified but realizes that Darcy's previous accusations against Wickham and her family were justified. "Oh! how heartily did she grieve over every ungracious sensation she had ever encouraged, every saucy speech she had ever directed towards him." (Vol. III, Chapter 10) Darcy arranges the proper marriage of Lydia and Wickham, saving the entire Bennet family from disrespect and embarrassment. When Elizabeth attempts to thank Darcy he admits "that the wish of giving happiness to you...led me on, I thought only of you." (Vol. III, Chapter 16) Lydia's reckless, improper behavior provides the catalyst for the engagement of Elizabeth and Darcy. Throughout the novel, Lydia is portrayed as an uncivilized, idle, irrational 16 year old girl. She is lacking in common sense and good judgment, disregarding the consequences of her actions. "Look here, I have bought this bonnet. I do not think it is very pretty; but I thought I might as well buy it as not." (Vol. II, Chapter 16). When Lydia returns to her family after eloping with Wickham she shows no remorse for the disgrace she brought to the family. "She turned from sister to sister, demanding their congratulations...she went after dinner to show her ring and boast of being married." (Vol. III, Chapter 9). After the marriage of Elizabeth and Darcy, Lydia continued her disregard for common decency as shown in a letter to her sister; "Wickham would like a place at court very much, and I do not think we shall have quite money enough to live upon without some help." (Vol. III, Chapter 19). Throughout Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, Lydia Bennet is portrayed as an uncivilized and irrational young woman; the youngest of five sisters who is the first to marry. Lydia is a minor character in the story in comparison to her older sister, Elizabeth, but she plays a major role in the marriage of her sister and Darcy. It is Lydia's improper behavior (elopement) that opens Elizabeth's eyes to Darcy's true goodness and affection, allowing her to admit her love for him. Both central characters are able overcome their pride and prejudice, admit their own faults, and build a stable, happy marriage.
